As the development of internet applications becomes more diverse, our demands for internet quality are getting higher. Therefore, this article lists methods to improve internet speed.

Broadband Service Provider

Choose a suitable broadband connection. If your internet speed is slow, it is often due to issues with the network routing. For example, when accessing T-Mobile and Verizon networks on AT&T, there are multiple paths between different carriers. However, when accessing AT&T networks on AT&T, the network path is more direct with fewer connections.

Network Devices

Use fiber optic network or shielded twisted pair network cables as much as possible for internet access to reduce network latency and packet loss.

It is recommended to use 5G frequency or 2G + 5G dual-band for wireless network access, in order to reduce network latency and packet loss, and to have a larger transmission bandwidth.

Choose good network devices such as optical modems, routers, switches, and network cards to process data throughput faster and improve internet speed.

When using wireless networks (Wi-Fi), it is not advisable to place terminals (wireless routers, wireless AP) near obstacles or large appliances that may block the coverage. Change the wireless network channel to a less congested one. Reduce electromagnetic wave interference.

It is best to choose wireless devices with large antennas to enhance signal coverage. (For devices of the same size, the performance of built-in antennas is not inferior to external ones).

Network Configuration

Use public DNS that supports IP Anycast + BGP to improve overall domain name resolution speed. For example, Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4.

Note: For more public DNS, please refer to the “List of Public DNS”.

The default DNS (automatically obtained) is provided by the network operator itself. If this DNS does not support BGP multi-line routing, accessing different networks may be relatively slower.

Software Configuration

Using network optimization software, the basic principle is to understand the network connection as a road, and the network optimization software arranges the traffic flow reasonably to reduce congestion. For example, the optimization Ping feature of cfosSpeed effectively reduces network latency. (Paid purchase, free trial available)

When playing online games, choose a server that is in the same network as yours. If you are on a different network, it is recommended to try using boost VPN, such as protonvpn or nordvpn. (Paid)
